The only feature that matters

Most of what separates padel clothing from any other sportswear is branding. One thing is not: the ball pocket.

Padel's serve is underarm off a bounce, which means you hold a second ball through most of your service games. Kit without a pocket leaves you playing with a ball in your non-racket hand, or trudging back to the bench between points. It is a small thing that becomes irritating quickly.

Five of the ten items here confirm a ball pocket in the manufacturer's own words. We recorded it only where they say so — one brand describes "side pockets" without calling them ball pockets, and that is what the table says, because a side pocket is not necessarily sized to hold a ball while you sprint.

What the table covers

We deliberately mixed the table rather than filling it with men's t-shirts: five men's items, five women's, across shorts, skirts, t-shirts, a polo and a dress. If you are looking for one specific garment type, the type column is the first one to sort by mentally.

Fabric is mostly polyester and recycled polyester blends. Two items publish feature lists without a composition, and those read "Not stated".

Fit — slim, regular or loose — is published less often than you would expect, so treat the gaps as gaps rather than as regular fit.

Sizes is worth reading closely. One maker runs junior and adult sizes in a single scale, and another labels its largest women's size "XO", which we have left as published rather than translating into something it does not say.

What to buy, in order

If you are kitting out from nothing, this is the order that matters.

  • 1

    Item
Shorts or skirt with a ball pocket
    Why
The one genuinely padel-specific garment. Everything else you probably already own.
  • 2

    Item
    A technical top
    Why
Any moisture-moving shirt works. Padel brands charge a premium for the logo more than the fabric.
  • 3

    Item
    A second set
    Why
Padel is sweaty and often played several times a week. Two sets beats one expensive one.

Brands that are not here

Head's Spanish store sells racket sportswear but nothing marketed for padel, so including it would have meant passing tennis kit off as padel kit. Adidas sits behind bot protection that we did not work around. Several smaller brands' stores no longer resolve at all — one has become a parked domain since its products were last listed elsewhere.

One brand appears only once for a practical reason: its store rate-limits heavily enough that mining a full catalogue was not reasonable, so we took the one product we could confirm properly rather than several we could not.

As throughout this section, we do not test gear, prices are the maker's recommended price rather than today's retail price, and the picks are justified by published specifications.

The rest of the kit

Clothing is the least consequential thing you will buy for padel. If you are starting out, shoes and a racket deserve the budget first, and socks will do more for your comfort than any shirt.

Questions about padel clothing

Do I need padel-specific clothing?

No. Any gym or tennis kit will do, and most people start that way. One detail is genuinely padel-specific and worth having: a ball pocket. Padel serves underarm from a bounce, so you hold a second ball constantly, and kit without somewhere to put it means playing with a ball in your hand or walking back to the bench.

What is a ball pocket?

A pocket sized to hold a padel ball securely while you move — on shorts, in the inner shorts of a skirt, or occasionally on a top. Five of the ten items here confirm one in the maker's own description. It is the single feature that separates padel kit from generic sportswear.

Do women's padel skirts have shorts underneath?

The ones here do, and that inner short is usually where the ball pocket lives. Manufacturers describe it as a culotte or inner short. If ball storage matters to you, check that specific wording rather than assuming, because not every skirt includes it.

What fabric is best for padel?

Polyester blends, including recycled ones, dominate for the same reason as in every court sport: they move sweat off the skin and dry fast. Padel is often played indoors in humid, glass-walled rooms, which makes moisture handling more important than it would be outdoors. Cotton feels nicer and performs worse.

How much should I spend on padel clothing?

Under €30 gets you a proper technical shirt or shorts from a padel brand, which is all most players need. The range in our table goes to about €80, and above the midpoint you are largely paying for brand and cut rather than performance. Spend the difference on shoes.
